Are you aware that a key figure of the political opposition in the UK, the Labour party, is called Ed Balls? It might not even be as funny if it were more apt.

    • Dave says:

I feel like I must have come across that name before, but it definitely slipped my mind. Thanks for the heads-up. It’s much harder to have a really funny simple name (the longer ones give a lot more room for silliness), so we always really cherish funny short names like Vint Cerf.

    • Arto says:

I used to live in England and I was always amused at how even the more respectable papers couldn’t resist playing up the name in their headlines when Balls was in the news. “Balls back at heart of Labour as Johnson quits” is one I remember seeing in the Guardian.

  2. nancyola says:

David, did you ever about Mr. Hogg. He supposedly named his daughters Ima and Urra. I heard this many years ago and it was said to be true. I’m enjoying your funny names.

    • Arto says:

According to Wikipedia (who’s always right), Ms. Ima Hogg was “one of the most respected women in Texas in the 20th century”. That’ll certainly qualify anyone for this blog! Thanks for the tip!

    • Dave says:

I remember hearing about the Hogg family. Actually, come to think of it, I may have heard that when I was 8 and living up in Canada, so it might be my oldest funny names memory. What a momentous event. Thanks for jogging my memory!

  3. Tom Lucas says:

Great website, thanks for “liking” my most recent rant. I plan to explore your list. Forgive me if you already wrote about this, but one of my favorite things to listen to when I was a teenager (totally dating myself) was the Tube Bar recordings. There have been many references in pop culture to this joy of joys. Here’s the Wikipedia link if you aren’t up on it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tube_Bar_prank_calls

  4. Javier says:

Or this other: Ben Dover http://www.bendover.com/

  5. Bumba says:

Yesterday weak-hitting, but ever-popular (because of his name) Coco Crisp tripled and homered in the same game, thereby doubling his total bases for this season and boosting his batting average all the way up to .167. So, what’s the official ruling on names like Coco Crisp and Dusty Rhodes and the like, where the surname is altered for these aesthetic reasons?

  7. Thomas says:

I seem to remember that on a recent trip to the United States, UK Prime Minister David Cameron was met and greeted by Assistant Chief of Protocol, one “Randy Bumgardner”. The British press had a field day.

  8. I just found your site today, and would like to add a gem from my primary school days:
Dealy Kanickle. I think it was actually spelt Knickle, but pronounced with a hard K. It just trips off the tongue!
Before I feel too guilty about nominating him, I’ll confess right now that I had an ancestor named Gugy. There, I feel better now (and hope Dealy never reads your blog).
    W.

  9. Headandheart says:

Glad to find Dr ffytche featured here for lacking a capital. I am keeping myself amused while studying Cognitive Psychology by spotting the silliest names. Zenon Pylyshyn is another psychologist who seems to lack something – in this case a vowel http://ruccs.rutgers.edu/faculty/pylyshyn.html

    • Dave says:

Wow, Zenon Pylyshyn is the best name. Apparently it took me 3 years to reply to this comment, but that name is worth it! Perhaps we can profile Dr. Pylyshyn soon!
