About

The Funny Names Blog began as the work of two friends, and then three, all born in three different countries, united by a shared appreciation for off-the-wall names. After years of spotting fun, improbable, unusual, and just plain bizarre names in sports, politics, showbiz, and the general consciousness, we set up this blog to celebrate the achievements of the many accomplished individuals who were blessed with these names, and to share our joy with the world. We’re practically saints.

We now have seven columnists who post with varying regularity, and the blog is updated several times every week.

The purpose of the blog is to celebrate people with great names, and no offense is intended. The site should be browsed in the spirit of good, harmless fun and appreciation. We try to educate readers a little bit on each person as well, summarizing amusing stories and notable accomplishments they may have had along the way.

You are free to draw inspiration from this blog if you have been christened or otherwise burdened with a strange or unusual name – all of these people became famous and successful with their “odd” names! Perhaps they never would’ve gotten to where they are had they been named Bob Smith.

Happy Browsing!

  1. Hello,
This is such a great idea, I love it! I went to school with a guy named, Doyle Lee. We were all friends with a guy named, Sun Moon. True story!! Though they are not famous (yet) I am sure they will be, just by virtue of their names. Maybe they will come across in your research one day…

  2. Fresh from my desk... says:

What a fun blog – great idea! Kudos to you both – even though one of you sports a lame name 😉
    Warmly,
    Laura

    • Dave says:

In case you were wondering, it’s me who sports the lame name. I’m hoping I can reach funny-named glory vicariously through my undying commitment to this blog 🙂

  3. Clip Snark says:

Great idea for a blog! I like to look at the names on the dry cleaning tickets as they spin around. My favorite so far has been Hugo Scully. I don’t know who he is, but I would NOT mess with him.

    • Dave says:

Thank you! Hugo Scully is one of those great names that sounds funnier and better the more you enunciate it. Hugo Scully. Hugo Scully.

Taffy Nivert has the same interesting-sounding quality about it. I hope Hugo gets famous enough to one day be featured in this blog. Thanks for your ongoing support and interest!

  4. This is wonderful. Quite useful for me; in the midst of a project on names. Great!

  5. Hi Dave, thanks for the like on Lets Go the Other Way…I deeply appreciate it and hope you’ll keep coming back…I’m off to cruise around your blog.

    Be encouraged!

    • Dave says:

Your running project is very, very impressive. I am encouraged! The closest I get to endurance events is that I’m good friends with Jeff Symonds, who came in third at the Ironman 70.3 World Championships last year. Keep up the great work!

  6. joyannaadams says:

Guppie Troop. He was pretty good pro bowler. Good idea!

    • Dave says:

Thank you – that’s a really good one! I’ve put it on our list of names to post about (there are over 1000 right now), but it might end up making it onto these pages quite quickly. I’m inspired 🙂

  7. Much fun. I’m fond of all sorts of names for all sorts of reasons, but especially have to admire those who ‘make a name’ for themselves because of or regardless of their given names.

    • Dave says:

I know… one of my personal missions is to find out how much a funny name influences the person. And just to get a chuckle from time to time – which ends up being a lot now that I’m one of the writers for this blog 🙂

  8. Fun website. Keep it up.

    • Dave says:

Thank you! I (and the rest of us, I’m sure) really appreciate it. This is our first award ever, so thanks for noticing us!

I’m glad we “caught you by the funny bone,” and I hope you have some Matthew Good and Feist songs in your “Canada’s best music, 5 songs at a time” series!

  9. drewpan says:

This is such a funny concept! Keep it up, guys!

  10. Hi Dave, Thanks for following my blog…I hope you enjoy the ride.

    Be encouraged!

  11. Hiya, Just to let you know I nominated your blog to receive the ABC blogger award. I mentioned you on my posting.

    http://justoutsidetheboxcartoon.com/2012/04/26/just-a-drop-in-the-ocean-2/

Hopefully, you’re happy to receive it and pass it on to another worthy blog. If not, no offence taken.

    Keep up the great posts.

    Marti

    • Dave says:

Thank you! Getting an award like that from a blog of your caliber means a lot. I have a draft of an ABC award post that I’ve been working on, but I’m trying to find a good way to tie it into the theme of our blog. In any case, thanks again, and you should know that I come by your blog at least 3 times a week now. Your cartoons are exceptional, and make for a very unique blog-reading experience.

  12. SO CLEVER! i was raised in the deep south and currently live in atlanta where men will live their entire adult lives with food nicknames like ‘Puddin,’ ‘Biscuit,’ or ‘Chops.’
it’s endearing but, moderately awkward calling a 250 pound man ‘PEANUT!’

    • Arto says:

Hahaha! I’ll have to move out down there and see if I can finally get people to call me Jellybean. Thanks for the compliment!

      • Dave says:

Arto, you probably already know this, but Kobe Bryant’s father was known as “Jellybean Bryant” by most of his teammates back when the elder Bryant was playing pro ball.

*Note to self: Add Jellybean Bryant to funny names list for a future post.*

    • Dave says:

Haha, I might have to start calling Arto “Biscuit Puddinchops” .. because obviously, if any of us needs help making their name funnier, it’s Arto, not Rob or me. 😉

One of the great things about having this blog (as opposed to just having the list of names that we were compiling on our own for several years) is that we meet other likeminded individuals who appreciate humorous names. It’s a surprisingly large number, which I think is a big reason why we’ve grown to 200+ followers in only a few short months.

It wouldn’t be possible without great readers like you!

  13. What a greta idea!! And awesome blog mister! Thanks so much for making me, not going to lie here, tear up a bit from laughter at times. I look forward to seeing what crazy names y’all come up with next 🙂

    • Dave says:

Thank you! Glad to hear it! Your laughter is the reason we write this blog. (Well, that and our own laughter)

  14. There are a few odd names that you might want to check out:

I.M. Hipp – Running back from Nebraska in the 1970s.
Pete LaCock Sr. (Better known as Peter Marshall – host of “Hollywood Squares”)
Pete LaCock Jr. – former Kansas City Royals player.

    • Dave says:

You know, we spent years compiling a list of over 2000 funny names (particularly baseball and political names) during our spare time, and we’re constantly amazed by how many people will come by and offer up a great name we haven’t even seen yet. You just offered three that weren’t on our list!

      Thanks for the tips!

P.S. In Arto’s upcoming post (which will be published Friday), he explores our love for funny names that are passed down through generations. The Pete Lacocks are another example of that principle. There’s nothing better than seeing a “Jr” or a roman numeral after an unusual name, because you know someone in a previous generation also had that name and embraced it enough to pass it down to their progeny.

      Thanks for stopping by!

  15. chancedagger says:

There is/was a publication called the Paris Review. When it was edited by George Plimpton, he asked his literary friends around the world to submit funny names but any name submitted had to be authenticated. He published the list in the Review, sometime back in the 1970s. It was hilarious. He had some of the best writers in the world submitting names. The only name I can remember is George Baretits, but if I can only remember one, I’m glad it’s this one. Anyway, I think your pursuit of such names is noble, and it might be worth your while to track down that issue of the Paris Review.

    • Dave says:

Wow, thanks for the tip! Very cool! I think it might have to become a mission of ours to find a copy of that article.

  16. S.Srinivas says:

That is a really cool topic to blog on 🙂 Your blog reminds me of the sheer joy of reading about Major Major Major Major’s predicament in Catch 22!

    • Dave says:

Wow, thank you very very very very much! (One “very” for each “major” 🙂 )

We’ve had quite a number of people compliment the writing we do in our blog, but you are the first person to compare us to anyone near the caliber of Joseph Heller. I actually haven’t read the book, but I guess now I’ll have to! Thanks for stopping by!

  17. This idea will read like one of the funniest school registers of all time. Everyone knows a funny name: one of my favourites was a posh girl, Ann Orange, who worked at the BBC and married someone with the surname ‘Broomhead’. They decided on a ‘double-barrel’ surname…

  18. amb says:

Thanks so much for liking my recent post – I’m so happy that I’ve found your blog! I’ll definitely be linking to it from my own blog and plan on stopping by to visit often,

    Cheers!
    Amber

  19. Raynifly says:

What a fun an genius idea you guys have. 😉

    • Dave says:

Thank you! We like to think so. 🙂 I hope you’ll keep coming back for more fun. Tomorrow’s post on the Bone Wars is probably one of the best posts we’ve ever written – I think you’ll enjoy it a lot! Thanks for visiting!

  20. SynthesistChronicles says:

I think “McLish” is my fav. 🙂

    • Dave says:

It’s definitely up there, for sure! I don’t know if there will ever be a day when something beats Outerbridge Horsey VII in my mind (for reasons we explain on the Funny Names Theory page), but Calvin Coolidge Julius Caesar Tuskahoma McLish is definitely one of the names that’s always been near the top of my list.

Oh well, I guess we have to keep posting until we find more names that can compete with those two… Come back soon!

  21. Thanks for checking out my blog….saw that you are here in SD and studying neuroscience (I studied speech language pathology for my Masters and almost, allllmost entered a neuro PhD program). I sell houses instead…ha! Love the funny name blog concept. This is making my husband’s idea of naming our (future) son Casper seem more plausible….

    • Dave says:

Do you want to know something really interesting? I used to be in real estate, and switched over to Neuro. I guess great minds think alike – except sometimes in opposite directions 🙂

Casper is a great name for a kid!

      • No way! Crazy!! I still have moments where I wonder “what if”…..I’m so fascinated by non-human primate language/communication studies…alas, real estate is keeping me so busy.

Yeah, I didn’t like Casper at first but I have to admit….it’s growing on me.

  22. cute!!! very creative. I remember my friend (who lived in a neighboring town) telling me in junior high that her principal’s name was Harry Bone. I don’t know why I still think it’s funny..but I still do. What a name.

  23. You have been nominated for an award! I was recently nominated for the “A Lovely Blog” award and as instructions dictate, and yours is a favorite blog to read, I am nominating you to also receive this award.

I have only been blogging since March, so my nomination came as a complete surprise. But I am pleased to be nominated. I started blogging to take up some of my free time and to hopefully kick start my dormant drive to write. I’ve been surprised by how much I enjoy it, and I hope my few readers enjoy it too.

I’ve made some connections here in the Blogosphere and I really enjoy the interactions of so many different types of people, from ghosts to yogurt eaters. Since blogging is very anonymous the honesty on these pages is sometimes staggering. People blog about the best and the worst and the mundane and mediocre, and each is different and each is a new joy. One of these connections is the person who nominated me for this beautiful and sentimental award. Her link is found here http://hometogo232.wordpress.com

I am very honored to have been considered. As requested, here are the rules/suggestions related to receiving this award:
•Share who gave it to you with a link back to their blog: http://hometogo232.wordpress.com

•Reveal seven random facts about yourself. (follows)
•Give this award to fifteen other bloggers. (I stopped at ten.)
•Pop the award on my blog. (I can send instructions.)

    Seven Things about me:

    1. I need a new hula hoop.

    2. I hate to shop. Groceries especially.

    3. I only hate inanimate objects and ideas.

    4. I like birdwatching.

    5. I am learning to be more tolerant, especially those whose ideas totally contradict my own.

    6. I avoid mirrors.

    7. I don’t know how apply make up.

Here are the blogs that I want to nominate for this award. They all have something special to offer those that take time to read their blogs.

    • Dave says:

I don’t know why I only just now saw this comment. Thanks for the recognition! Yours is a lovely blog as well!

If you like birdwatching, you’ll probably enjoy our posts on Sir Stamford Raffles, Erasmus Darwin, and Churchill Babington. I don’t know what it is about funny-named people and birdwatching, but they seem to coincide a lot. Hmm… sounds like I might be on the verge of another Funny Names Theory…

  24. jannatwrites says:

This is a unique idea for a blog. Some names make me wonder what the parents were thinking.

    • Dave says:

      Thank you!

Hopefully, if this blog gets big enough, we’ll know what the parents were thinking: “I hope this name is good enough (and our child successful enough) to make it onto the Funny Names Blog!”

  25. idiotprufs says:

It’s surprising that there’s so weird names out there. And some of them aren’t children of Frank Zappa.

    • Dave says:

I know – it’s amazing! When I started making a funny names list about six years ago, I could never have imagined how much material we’d find. I think we could easily devote a week of posts to the progeny of Frank Zappa and Bob Geldof alone. Those guys had a gift.

  26. Matt Wilson says:

There are just too many interesting blogs right now – it often takes me just as long to respond to comments because this world is so distracting. How dare people be so interesting and creative!

  27. seakist says:

    Genius concept!

  28. Hi, after recently bagging Arto (I think he posted Mr Crapper), I feel a need to allow a come back in the spirit of good blogging. How about a write up on Dr Wilhelm Kattwinkel? (not sure what category he would fit under, so maybe not valid). As an entomologist he went on a butterfly gathering expedition, as you do, and fell into the Oldupai Gorge. It became one of the greatest finds wrt human evolution, with ‘human’ (well a stream that didn’t end up as us, but I digress), remains found dating back 1.9 million years ago.

    Marti
PS. How about a new page on the site requesting funny names, like I request jokes – you can never have too much material on standby.

    • Arto says:

Dr. Kattwinkel sure ticks off the two criteria we have on the site – funny name and accomplished, kind of kooky life story. Thanks for the tip. And for the tip on getting more tips. You’re certainly right, you can never have too much material.

  29. caitlambert says:

very whimsical and quite entertaining. 🙂 Thanks for liking my posts and taking time to stop by and read.

    • Dave says:

Thank you! “Whimsy” is a word I should really start using more often. It sounds exactly like its meaning!

You’re exceptionally prolific with your blogging. It takes three of us just to keep up a once-a-day pace.

      • Lamberta says:

lol. 🙂 Thanks. Well, right now I have the time to blog more. When school starts I’ll probably be struggling to keep up more. 🙂

    • Dave says:

w00t! Thank you! I thought I had already replied to this and Liked your post, but apparently neither of those things are true. It might have to do with the fact that the comment came about 15 hours before I took the MCAT.

Nonethess, my apologies for letting this slip through the cracks, and it’s absolutely wonderful to hear your positive feedback! “The Daily Blowhole” is a really good name for a blog, and the writing is good too!

  31. patsandy says:

    absolutely LOVE this blog!

  32. sixpuns says:

Outerbridge? You know there’s a bridge named the Outerbridge in NYC, right? …for real, I didn’t make it up, lol

    • Dave says:

I did not know that… Hopefully it’s named after Outerbridge Horsey VII. A lot more things need to be named after that guy! I heard a rumor through the grapevine that outer space got its name in honor of the Outerbridge Horseys. [citation needed]

  33. paralaxvu says:

How about Plastic Surgeon Woffles Wu from Singapore…?

  34. thalia3 says:

Wanted to draw your attention to Walt Disney’s collaborator, Ub Iwerks. 🙂 Happy Monday.

  35. I submit for your consideration, the following three names. All three were officers of early Charles City. Ca 1700, Littlebury Epes, was a sheriff for some years before he became Coroner in 1725, along with the fellow oddly named Drury Stith. Another gentleman who acted as sheriff ca 1700 was one Chicheley Corbn Thacker.

    Enjoy.

    http://beckysaysthings.wordpress.com/2012/07/18/becky-says-things-about-being-nominated-for-an-award/

  38. I wrote and published a book called My Status Update Journey which covers a zillion topics. One of which fits this blog perfectly. My suggestion is Frostee Rucker. Look into it. Its like he is the child of Scooby Doo.

    Nice blog!

  39. Liz says:

Looks like I’m a few days late in nominating you for the VBA (Becky beat me to it on the 18th). Aw shucks. Know you’ve been officially “nominated” again;-)

Another topic: It’s not just chefs with the funny names in the food industry. Clarence Birdseye? Harland David “Colonel” Sanders? Ray Kroc? Betty Crocker? (fake person, so does she count?) Just saying.

    Appreciate your humor. Funny stuff.

I remember seeing this ages ago, and it’s every bit as funny today. Thanks for the laugh!

    • Scriptor Obscura says:

This made me cry with laughter. Oh my god is this ever FUNNY! I was struggling to keep from bursting out in laughter! Oh my god this is so GOOD! AHAHAAAAHAAAAAHAHAHHHAAAAAAHAAAAAAAAAA! Sharing this video already! Lol lol lol!!! 😀 😆 This is excellent! 😀

    • Scriptor Obscura says:

      • Dave says:

Haha, so glad you’re enjoying it! We’ve been around for a while now, but busy schedules kept us from reaching out to other bloggers. Glad to have you along!

  41. OK team Dave. I don’t normally badger fellow bloggers but in this instance I feel a need to. Why aren’t you guys entering in my ‘August name the evil pink aliens’ competition? http://wp.me/P1X90G-zz

If funny names is anyone’s speciality (even if you didn’t name them, you find them), then its yours! Just think, if you won, you could add to your current bio and blog awards the blue ribbon winner of the evil pink alien naming competition. I’m sure it doesn’t get cooler than that 🙂

    Marti

    • Dave says:

Oh no! I missed this comment and that post. It’s been a super busy time with med school apps and Olympic coverage and this just slipped through the cracks! 😦 😦 If it’s any consolation, I’m sure they have fantastic names already, and if not, then I’d like to suggest Algernon and Philip as the names for the two aliens!

  42. KF says:

I stumbled across this website and I love that you included Olympic athlete Michael Fuchs, as that is also my dad’s name! As a Fuchs living in America, I have been aware of my funny name status since I was probably 10 years old, and while it used to bother me I have learned to embrace it. There’s nothing like the stunned moment of silence you get when a customer service person asks you to spell your name over the phone. 😛 My only gripe with my epic funny last name? Writing it in cursive is just asking for trouble…

    • Arto says:

Thanks for the comment! That is indeed quite the name – I can only imagine how calls to the DMV progress with that last name, haha. Actually, I’m so impressed with your funny-named antics that I think you should write a short guest post about life as a Fuchs for the Funny Names Blog 😉

  43. Tim says:

  44. Hey guys, it’s your old pal Becky, and I’d like to say this thing to you: I’ve just given you the So Sweet Blog award! 45. I actually did some research into names for some of the characters i was currently painting. My three favorites were Snow White Lopez and Snowkeana White… and the big winner… Taco Proper. These were actually peoples names that teachers, nurses etc had come upon in real life. I will give you the whole list if you ask. It makes for about 10 minutes of hilarity! Great blog!

  49. Lucky Wreck says:

What a brilliant concept! Names are, indeed fascinating! 🙂

    • Dave says:

Thanks! How did you decide on the name Lucky Wreck, anyway?

      • Lucky Wreck says:

I feel like I came upon it by cheating 😛 I was trying to figure out what to call my blog, and got frustrated so I went to a blog name generator thingie. It spewed out a bunch of different combinations of words, and “Lucky & Wreck”. Lucky Wreck stood out to me because I often find myself writing about feeling like a wreck, but I also feel very lucky 🙂

        • Dave says:

That’s actually more logical than most blog name stories. One of the top results for our blog is people searching for “funny blog names”, so we’re definitely aware that it isn’t easy finding a blog name, unless you decide to go very literal like we did 🙂

  50. Scriptor Obscura says:

This is a great idea for a blog. I commend you for starting this. The Horsey guy…oh my god…wow…I couldn’t believe there’d be somebody named “Horsey” out there, and whatever his first name was. He must’ve been bullied mercilessly in school! And how can you even GO OUT with that kind of name, and show your face in public??????! You’d be laughed out of every room and every place you went whenever you introduced yourself! That Horsey guy, wow, he just made me laugh…how can somebody really exist with that name????!!!!! Kudos to you, and keep it up. I once heard the name Starflower Moonbright, but that’s just one of those hippie names left over from that hippie era in the ’60’s…And Gwyneth Paltrow named her daughter Apple, if I’m not mistaken, but that’s by far not the weirdest of names by any means…Also some people give their kids really horrible names that aren’t funny at all, like a neonazi couple named their son Adolf Hitler Campbell, and the local Walmart refused to write his name on the birthday cake they ordered…they named their daughter after another fascist white supremacist too…I don’t know…I feel sorry for those poor kids that had to be born to those two pieces of excrement….and that’s putting it mildly. But those names aren’t funny at all, they’re more sad as all hell. By the way, speaking of names, did you know that in Germany all names have to come from an approved list and have to be approved by the local authority first before you can officially name your child? Its true and its real. Some other countries have this too, I think, if I’m not mistaken. Really. That might be a good idea in some cases…Anyway, great site. You have a great idea here.

    • Dave says:

Haha, I think having a funny name can actually make you a better person. We have a Funny Names Theory called “The Kermit Can Kill Conjecture” that states that growing up with a silly-sounding name can make a guy really tough (a la a Boy Named Sue) http://funnynamesblog.com/theory/

But I agree, names like Adolf Hitler Campbell are just unfortunate. The government should step in and stop that. However, Benedict Cumberbatch and Outerbridge Horsey VII have clearly demonstrated the power they have to make awesome people!

Finally, I think we could easily have a whole blog devoted to celebrity baby names. We’ve featured a few celebrity baby names in our “Funny Names In The News” segments (we do those every Friday), but thus far, the youngest person we’ve featured is Ever Gabo Jovovich-Anderson (daughter of Milla Jovovich and Paul W.S. Anderson).

    Hi,

My name is Michelle of BowlingShoes.com, BowlingBags.com, BowlingBalls.com and DiscountBowlingSupply.com. I came across your blog http://funnynamesblog.com/ and loved it. You seem like you enjoy staying active and participating in group events. I think your voice and energy are perfectly in line with the kind of people we’re looking to attract to our brand.

Our bowling stores carry products that are not just functional but also fashionable. We carry fun bowling accessories that will personalize your style and improve your game.

I’d love an opportunity to work with you, in one of two ways. You can review our products in exchange for one piece of merchandise or publish an article on our behalf. Below are the details for each option:

1 – You can choose one pair of Elite bowling shoes ($40 max) from BowlingShoes.com, BowlingBalls.com or DiscountBowlingSupply.com OR you can choose one single-tote bowling bag, Elite or Rev brand ($30 max) from BowlingBags.com, BowlingBalls.com or DiscountBowlingSupply.com (We’ll ship either of these to you for free). Write a review by talking about your experience, whether it’s our website or our products. Please take note, this option is only offered in the USA at this time, due to high overseas shipping costs.
Check out the flyer for more details here: http://snapshackk.com/BowlingBallsGiveaway.jpg

2 – You can post a bowling related article we give you with pictures on your blog for us. For this we can pay you $20 for posting it. The article will be very well-written and you can edit it however you like.

As mentioned before, we’re always looking to building future relationships with our bloggers. If we get a good amount of referral traffic from your site, we’re totally open many more collaborations down the road.

Not to rush you, but please respond ASAP. We’re contacting a lot of other similar bloggers, and we only have a limited budget for the month for both giveaways and articles.

Keep up the great work with your blog!

    Regards,
    Michelle
